New York, 10 September 2024 – The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly officially began today with the swearing-in ceremony of Philemon Yang as President of the 79th Session. The Maldives Mission to the United Nations, including the Permanent Representative Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and mission staff attended the event. Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, takes on this important role outlining a vision centered on unity in diversity, with a focus on advancing global peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for all.
The High-Level Week of the 79th UNGA, scheduled to begin on 22 September, will be the first major event of this session, with world leaders gathering to discuss pressing global issues.
The swearing-in also marked the conclusion of the tenure of Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session, whose leadership was highlighted by significant developments in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), pandemic preparedness, and addressing international peace and security challenges.
