New York, Sunday, 21 September 2021: The Maldives Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel arrives in New York this afternoon. Foreign Minister Khaleel will lead the Maldives delegation in the High-level Week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). The Maldives Permanent Representative to the UN Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed received the Minister at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
During his visit to New York, Minister Khaleel will speak at the General Debate of the General Assembly. The Minister will also participate in several High-level meetings, engage in high-level discussions with other Member States, and co-chair a multistakeholder panel. Minister Dr Khaleel will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from key bilateral and multilateral partners of the Maldives, and friendly developing countries.
This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Maldives joining the United Nations, and coincides with the eightieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Charter. At this year’s General Assembly, the Maldives priorities are – strengthening multilateralism; a reformed, responsive and representative UN; support for sustainable development, including financing, sustainable debt management; more ambitious climate action; and advocacy on behalf of small island developing States.
The High-level Week of UNGA80 will take place from 22 to 27 September 2025.
