Maldives’ Achievements in Counter-Terrorism Praised by UN Counter-Terrorism Committee

New York, August 16th, 2024 – The Counter-Terrorism Committee of the Security Council held a session to review the progress of the Maldives in implementing counter-terrorism measures on 15 August 2024. The session included representatives from the President’s Office, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Attorney General’s Office, Maldives Police Service, Maldives Customs Service, National Counter-Terrorism Center, Maldives Monetary Authority, and the National Reintegration Center, alongside the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.

The agenda focused on the measures taken by the Maldives to address the recommendations from the Counter-Terrorism Committee's 2019 assessment visit, and to follow up on the findings of the Overview of Implementation Assessment conducted in 2021.

The Maldives detailed its society-based approach to counter-terrorism, which includes comprehensive efforts in capacity building, legislative reforms, and strategies for rehabilitation, repatriation, and reintegration.

Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), Natalia Gherman, commended the Maldives for engaging with CTED and efforts made to enhance the Maldivian counter-terrorism framework. The United States and China also reiterated their commitment to supporting the Maldives in further strengthening its counter-terrorism measures.

In his remarks, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed highlighted capacity limitations as a primary challenge and emphasized the ongoing need for international support to address these issues effectively.
