New York, August 13, 2024 – The Maldives Mission to the United Nations participated in the 103rd Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly, where significant decisions were made on pressing global issues. These discussions focused on vital areas such as environmental sustainability, racial equality, and the protection of ocean ecosystems.
One of the outcomes from the session included resolutions on forest management and cryospheric sciences, reflecting a growing global commitment to preserving vital ecosystems and combating climate change. The Maldives, as a small island nation, remains deeply invested in these environmental initiatives, recognizing their direct impact on vulnerable communities.
The General Assembly also addressed the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI), an essential tool for assessing the unique challenges faced by small island developing states (SIDS). The Maldives continues to advocate for the inclusion of such indices to ensure that the needs of vulnerable nations are prioritized in international policies.
The session also saw the adoption of a resolution to declare July 25th as the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, reinforcing the global fight against racism and gender inequality.
Furthermore, the General Assembly passed a resolution to facilitate the implementation of the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which focuses on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). This agreement is an important effort to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable ocean governance.
