21 August 2024, New York - The Maldives delivered a statement at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate held today, under the agenda item ‘Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace’. The statement was delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Shiruzimath Sameer.
In the Statement, the Maldives underscored that peace building and sustaining peace is interconnected with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Maldives further recognized the need to strengthen political and social structures through inclusive models that take into account the diverse local contexts, as a key to effective conflict prevention.
Highlighting the prominence of collaboration in promoting global peace and security, the Maldives also urged the international community to take enhanced measures to ensure an immediate end to the genocidal acts perpetuated by Israel in Palestine. Lastly, the Maldives reiterated its call for a solution to this conflict through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the pre-1967 borders.
