The UN High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution adjourned in New York, today.
The Conference took place from 28 to 30 July, at the United Nations headquarters. It began with a High-Level Meeting “Delivering on Peace: Consolidating Outcomes and Charting the Path Forward”, where the chairs of the thematic working groups presented key insights across political, legal, economic and humanitarian tracks, and articulated next steps to empower the practical functioning of the State of Palestine upon realization of the two-State solution. This was followed by the plenary segment of the Conference, where 122 countries and 6 organizations delivered statements.
The Maldives Delegation at the Conference was headed by Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed. Speaking at the Conference, the Maldives Ambassador stated that the Conference must be a turning point to end the Israel-Palestine conflict and said that the Maldives “may be small, but we have never wavered in standing for what is right. This is why we recognized the State of Palestine in 1988.” The Maldives Ambassador calls on the world to recognize the truth, noting that “The State of Palestine exists. One hundred forty-seven countries in this Hall recognize it and more have expressed their intent to do so. The Palestinian flag flies outside this Hall. Its sovereignty and its people must not be erased. From Gaza to the West Bank to East Jerusalem, Palestinians have the inalienable right to remain, to return, and to govern a State of their own—freely and fully.”
